Our Hero- Wg Cdr Vinod Nebb

Wg Cdr Vinod Nebb was just a 22 year old under-trainee pilot when the 1965 war broke out. He was very eager to participate to overcome the humiliation of 1962. On his insistence, he was allowed to do Combat Air Patrol (CAP) and during one such sortie on Sep 06 1965 over Halwara, he shot down a Pakistani F86 Sabre aircraft. For his display of valour in this War, he was awarded his first Vir Chakra by the President Dr S Radhakrishnan. In 1971 during the liberation of Bangladesh War, he shot down the second Sabre aircraft and was awarded a second Vir Chakra by the President Shri V V Giri.

Cadet Ashish Ranjan

BACKGROUND : Support Our Heroes (SOH) was approached by cadet Ashish Ranjan who after successfully completing 3 years of training in the NDA was medically boarded out when he was diagnosed with Chronic Beta Thalassemia (an incurable genetic disease which may lead to minimal performance impairment) during the Induction Medical Examination for joining Indian Naval Academy. By the time his condition was diagnosed, he had already completed 6 semesters of the 8 semester B Tech course. He is from a humble background where father is a farmer, mother is a housewife and elder brother is currently unemployed.

PROBLEM : For completing his final year of Engineering course, he needed an immediate help of total Rs 1.5 Lakh. From the stipend of Rs 50,000 which he had received after completing the training at NDA, he partially paid his last year course fee which left the remaining balance to Rs 1 Lakh.

HELPED SUCCESSFULLY : SOH team approved to pay a total of Rs 75,000 which had been disbursed in two parts - Rs 50,000 & Rs 25,000. Both the cheques were delivered & received by the cadet.

This disease can't be cured but can only be slowed down by medication. His family is spending around Rs 7,500 every month for the medicines. He is the only child to his parents so his father is doing everything in his capacity to keep him alive and help him complete his B.Tech degree.
He is academically brilliant, had scored 90% in Class 12 and had secured admission in IIT Madras and IIIT KOTTAYAM but let go of both the universities to fulfil his dream of becoming a Naval Officer.
